Commissioner Mactus Forau Visits Kirakira Correctional Centre

The Commissioner of the Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI), Mr. Mactus Forau, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Kirakira Correctional Centre (KCC) in Makira/Ulawa Province.

Commissioner Forau thanked the Commandant for the all-inclusive update and commended the management and staff for their commitment, dedication, and commendable efforts in maintaining security and stability at the centre.

During their discussion, Commissioner Forau emphasized that one of the organisation’s key flagship priorities is to strengthen discipline across all levels. He highlighted that discipline must be upheld not only by officers but also by inmates, noting that it remains the foundation and backbone of any disciplined organisation worldwide.

Commissioner Forau also meet with the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Government, executive to discuss on the relocation of the centre as it is one of the top priorities of the Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI) and the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Government to prioritise the relocation of the Kirakira Correctional Centre. He noted that business houses and private buildings have surrounded the current centre facility and causes very high security risk to the centre.

Commissioner Forau also paid courtesy visit to Public Solicitor officer, Makira/Ulawa Provincial Police Commander (PPC) and the Diocese of the Hanuato’o, of ACOM as part of his official visit

During his courtesy visit he raised concerns regarding overcrowding in correctional facilities, stating that the increasing inmate population necessitates the expansion of existing infrastructure to effectively address this ongoing challenge.

In addition, the Commissioner highlighted the importance of introducing and implementing Community Rehabilitation & reintegration programs as one of the Great Coalition policies. He stated that Community involvement and participation will help to strengthen restorative justice, offender rehabilitation, reintegration programs and correctional systems to reduce reoffending and improve community awareness, policing and safety

Kirakira Correctional Centre Commandant, Mr. John Keith, expressed his sincere appreciation for the Commissioner’s visit and acknowledged the continued motivation and administrative support provided by the CSSI Executive Office.
