Chairman of the Public Service Commission Attends the Fono: Pacific Public Service Leaders’ Conference in Samoa
The Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Mr. Milner Tozaka, is attending The Fono: Pacific Public Service Leaders’ Conference in Apia, Samoa, from November 18th to 21st, 2024.
The Fono serves as a Pacific-led forum designed to facilitate the exchange of information, insights, and strategies for addressing public service developments, challenges, and reform opportunities across the region. It provides a unique platform where Pacific Public Service Leaders set the agenda to ensure relevance to regional priorities.
This marks the second year since the establishment of the Fale that an in-person Fono has been convened, and the first to be hosted by a Pacific Public Service Commission. Following a decision made by Pacific Public Service Leaders in 2023, this year’s conference is being hosted by the Samoa Public Service Commission, with secretariat support provided by the Fale.
The primary aim of Fono 2024 is to identify practical approaches to address the pressing needs of the region, as articulated by Pacific Public Service Leaders. This includes fostering cooperative and mutually supportive solutions that leverage Pacific expertise and knowledge.
During the conference, Chairman Tozaka underscored the significance of the Fono as a forum for Pacific nations to share experiences, tackle challenges collaboratively, and exchange best practices to enhance public service development across the region.
The Fono 2024 programme is designed to:
- Strengthen peer-to-peer relationships among Pacific public service leaders.
- Advance dialogue and develop solutions in priority areas identified by Commissioners during recent Fale sub-regional meetings.
- Host the Quarterly Fale Governance Board Meeting (Quarter 4, 2024).
- Convene the Fono-proper and produce a comprehensive Conference Communique.
Public service leaders also participated in panel discussions, addressing critical topics relevant to public sector reform and innovation.
Chairman Tozaka is accompanied by a delegation that includes Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Service, Mr. Luke Cheka, Director of IPAM, Mr. Solomon Manea, and Assistant Secretary of the Public Service Commission, Ms. Sandra Maezama. The trip is fully funded by New Zealand Public Service Fale
The conference reflects the continued commitment of Pacific nations to work together, sharing expertise and resources to build stronger, more effective public services for their citizens.
