Central Province Commences IDA for Savo and Russell Islands

TULAGI, Central Province – The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), in collaboration with the Central Province Provincial Emergency Response Team (PERT), has officially started a coordinated five-day Initial Damage Assessment for Central Province starting Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The operation began in Tulagi, where NDMO officers arrived to conduct a formal briefing with the local PERT members. A key component of the preparation included a specialized training session for the response team on the use of the Kobo Collect Application, a digital tool designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of field data collection during disaster evaluations.

Following orientation, teams are scheduled to deploy to Savo Island and the Russell Islands on Sunday, May 17th. Field assessments will be carried out extensively across both locations from Monday, May 18th, through Wednesday, May 20^th 2026. These assessments are important for identifying local needs and develop an informed recovery strategies.

On Thursday, May 21st, the PERT teams will return to Tulagi for a thorough debriefing and to finalize the official assessment data and reports. The mission will conclude on Friday, May 22nd, as NDMO officers travel back to Honiara.

This assessment represents an important step in the governments ongoing response to TC Maila for identifying impacts, priorities and the development of an informed recovery strategy to get affected communities back to their normal way of life.
