Bad Weather Expected Over the Easter Period

As the nation observes the Easter long weekend, a time of reflection and worship commemorating the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ – the public is advised to remain vigilant and take precaution measures due to an active low currently located south of Western province, Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service forecasted a low-pressure system currently active south of western province and is expected to intensify over the weekend into early next week. During this time, the country will be expecting strong winds, high swells leading to coastal erosions, and Heavy Rains that may lead to flooding of rivers and streams.

The National Emergency Operation Centre/National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is now activated on standby and is actively liaising with the Meteorological Service to closely monitor the progression of the low-pressure system.

In light of this developing situation, public, Communities, families, and individuals are strongly advised to take necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.

• Secure homes and belongings and prepare emergency supplies where necessary.
• Avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas prone to flooding or strong winds.
• Do not travel by boats or canoes between islands during this period.
• Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers.
• Do not swim in flooded rivers or fast-moving waters.
• Do not drive or walk-through floodwaters.
• People living along or close to slope must lookout for possible landslides.
