Australia Strengthens Solomon Islands Education Through Major ICT and Inclusive Learning Resources Handover
Partnership delivers 200 laptops, ICT equipment and inclusive education resources to strengthen teacher preparation, digital learning and educational opportunities.
Honiara, Thursday 8 October 2026 — The Solomon Islands Government, through the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD), has warmly welcomed another significant contribution from the Australian Government towards strengthening the quality, accessibility and inclusiveness of education in Solomon Islands.
The Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Hon. Stephen Kumi, joined the Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Mr Jeff Roach, and senior officials of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) this morning for the official handover of Australian Government-funded Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment, accessories and inclusive education resources.
The ceremony, held at SINU, marked another important milestone in the longstanding partnership between Solomon Islands and Australia, reflecting the two governments’ shared commitment to improving education outcomes, building institutional capacity and ensuring that all learners have opportunities to reach their full potential.
A major highlight of the handover was the provision of 200 laptop computers to support student teachers undertaking their teaching practicum, alongside ICT equipment and learning resources designed to strengthen teaching, learning and inclusive educational practices.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Kumi expressed the Solomon Islands Government’s sincere appreciation to the Government and people of Australia for their continued generosity and enduring commitment to education development.
The Minister acknowledged that the significance of the handover extended beyond the physical resources being provided. It represented a practical investment in the professional preparation of future teachers, improved learning opportunities and a more equitable and responsive education system.
The provision of ICT equipment comes at an important time as MEHRD continues to advance reforms aimed at improving the quality of teaching, strengthening teacher professional development and supporting educational institutions to respond to emerging technological demands.
Access to appropriate digital tools will enable student teachers to better prepare lessons, access educational materials, develop teaching resources and strengthen their confidence in using technology during classroom practice.
The Minister further recognised the importance of inclusive education resources, emphasising the need for an education system that responds to the diverse learning needs of children, including learners with disabilities and those requiring additional educational support.
The newly developed Inclusive Education Manual represents an important resource for strengthening teachers’ understanding and practical application of inclusive education principles, helping schools create more welcoming, supportive and accessible learning environments.
In his official remarks, Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Mr Jeff Roach reaffirmed Australia’s continued commitment to working alongside Solomon Islands in strengthening access to quality and inclusive education.
The High Commissioner’s participation underscored the depth of the bilateral relationship and Australia’s sustained investment in education as an essential foundation for human development, opportunity and national prosperity.
The initiative forms part of the broader Solomon Islands–Australia education partnership, including Australia’s support through the Stronger Education Together (SET) programme.
Representing SINU’s senior management, Pro-Vice Chancellor Corporate, Dr William Parairato, also delivered remarks acknowledging the importance of the partnership and the contribution of the resources to the University’s teaching, learning and institutional development.
The ceremony was also attended by Dr Patricia Rodie, who expressed sincere appreciation to the Australian Government for the timely assistance.
Dr Rodie particularly welcomed the provision of the 200 laptops, highlighting their practical value in supporting student teachers during their teaching practicum. The equipment will provide valuable opportunities for aspiring teachers to strengthen their digital competencies and apply technology meaningfully in school-based teaching experiences.
The occasion also provided an opportunity for officials to view the ICT equipment and resources and appreciate the practical benefits that Australia’s assistance will bring to SINU and the wider education sector.
For MEHRD, the handover supports the broader national ambition of building a capable, professional and inclusive teaching workforce equipped to respond to the changing needs of learners throughout Solomon Islands.
The Ministry recognises that investments in teacher preparation, digital learning and inclusive education are essential to improving classroom practice and delivering sustainable improvements in learning outcomes, particularly for children in rural, remote and disadvantaged communities.
MEHRD extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of Australia, the Australian High Commission, the Stronger Education Together programme and SINU for their continued collaboration and shared commitment to advancing education in Solomon Islands.
The handover stands as another tangible demonstration of the strong friendship, mutual trust and enduring partnership between Solomon Islands and Australia — a partnership that continues to translate shared priorities into meaningful educational opportunities for Solomon Islanders.
