Ambassador of Portugal Presents Letter of Credence to Acting Governor General
The Ambassador of the Republic of Portugal to Solomon Islands, His Excellency António Albuquerque Moniz, presented his Letter of Credence to the Acting Governor General, Hon. Patterson J. Oti, at Government House today (March 12, 2025).
In welcoming Ambassador Moniz, the Acting Governor General expressed Solomon Islands’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Portugal in areas of mutual interest.
“The Government of Solomon Islands is eager to work closely with Portugal to explore new avenues for collaboration, and we are confident that our partnership will continue to grow and thrive,” Hon. Oti stated.
Hon. Oti acknowledged Portugal’s dedication to multilateralism, global peace, and sustainability, emphasizing that Portugal’s focus on ocean sustainability, economic and social rights, and international security aligns with the values of Solomon Islands.
“We commend Portugal’s contributions to UN Peacekeeping Missions and appreciate its principled approach to international cooperation. As we face global challenges, we look forward to strengthening our partnership with Portugal to enhance multilateralism and address pressing global issues,” he added.
The Acting Governor General further highlighted Portugal’s application to become a Dialogue Partner of the Pacific Islands Forum as a testament to its commitment to deepening ties with the Pacific, particularly in alignment with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
“The shared commitment to sustainable development and ocean conservation between Portugal and the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is essential for fostering strong partnerships. Solomon Islands’ support for Portugal’s candidacy will be instrumental in achieving these common goals and ensuring a more sustainable and resilient future for the Pacific region,” Hon. Oti remarked.
He also praised Portugal’s dedication to enhancing the resilience of Pacific Small Island Developing States, particularly in addressing challenges such as natural disasters, climate change, and economic vulnerabilities. He highlighted the importance of initiatives supporting youth policy, economic recovery, trade, and energy transition for sustainable development.
“Solomon Islands is eager to explore further collaboration and deepen our partnership to address regional challenges, creating lasting impacts and reinforcing our shared commitment to resilience and sustainability,” he added.
In his address, Ambassador Moniz reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Pacific Island states to enhance their resilience in the face of regional challenges.
“Portugal looks forward to further strengthening the relationship between our two nations, and we are confident that we can count on your friendly cooperation, as well as the esteemed Government of Solomon Islands,” Ambassador Moniz stated.
