HEALTH MINISTER CONFRONTS LONGSTANDING CHALLENGES AT LATA HOSPITAL
Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Morris Toiraena has recognised the challenges facing Lata Hospital emphasising the urgent need for better facilities, staffing and healthcare.
During a short visit to Lata Hospital, the Minister received a briefing from Dr Hugh Blessing Renga who outlined critical challenges facing the hospital, including shortages of doctors, nurses, essential medicines and medical resources.
Dr Renga said the hospital currently operates with only two doctors, despite needing at least four to adequately serve the province.
He also raised concerns over shortages of nursing staff and essential drugs, with the hospital pharmacy experiencing stock shortages.
The doctor stressed that Temotu’s geographical isolation makes adequate healthcare services particularly important, as patients face significant distances when seeking further medical treatment.
He said Lata Hospital urgently needs improved facilities and resources comparable to those available at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) to better respond to the healthcare needs of the province.
Minister Toiraena described the situation as a sad state of affairs, acknowledging that the hospital’s condition had deteriorated over many years of neglect.
He said the Government was aware of the challenges facing the hospital and has introduced new arrangements to address shortages of doctors and nurses, including tougher measures relating to medical staffing.
The Minister also indicated that Lata Hospital requires more than renovation, stressing that a new hospital is needed to provide appropriate healthcare infrastructure for the people of Temotu.
The visit provided the Minister with an opportunity to hear directly from frontline health workers and better understand the immediate challenges affecting healthcare delivery in the province.
He acknowledged that the Government faces the task of addressing these longstanding challenges to ensure the people of Temotu have access to reliable healthcare services closer to home.
The Minister said the Government and the World Health Organisation have already secured partnership for a new hospital project for Lata.
