RAPPP strengthens RSIPF operational safety training with SBD $430,000 equipment donation
The Australian Federal Police (AFP), through the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and AFP Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP), has donated operational safety and medical equipment valued at more than SBD $430,000 (approximately AUD $77,000) to the RSIPF Operational Safety Training Unit. The equipment will support recruit training and the recertification of serving police officers across Solomon Islands. The handover took place at the RSIPF Tactical Training Centre.
Operational safety training (OST) prepares police officers to manage operational situations safely and professionally. It helps officers maintain the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to perform their duties, respond appropriately to challenging situations and minimise risks to themselves and the public.
The equipment will strengthen OST programs and support the RSIPF Operational Safety Assessment framework, which helps ensure officers maintain the skills and competencies required for frontline policing.
The donation includes operational safety equipment such as extendable and soft training batons, handcuffs, training weapons, inert OC spray training systems, sparring suits, tactical bags and personal protective equipment. Medical supplies include first aid kits, trauma kits and an automated external defibrillator to support safe, practical training.
AFP RAPPP Advisor James Richardson said the equipment would support the professional development of RSIPF officers.
“This donation reflects the AFP’s ongoing commitment to supporting the professional development of RSIPF officers and strengthening frontline policing capability throughout Solomon Islands,” Mr Richardson said.
The Tactical Training Centre provides recruit training and operational safety recertification for serving officers. The new equipment will help RSIPF instructors deliver contemporary, scenario-based training and prepare officers for frontline policing challenges.
RSIPF OST Officer-in-Charge Inspector Johnny Niabo said the equipment would strengthen practical training for recruits and serving officers.
“This equipment will strengthen practical OST delivery for recruits and serving officers, helping them maintain the skills and confidence to perform their duties safely and professionally. We appreciate the continued support from the AFP through RAPPP in strengthening RSIPF operational capability,” Inspector Niabo said.
The medical equipment will also help instructors respond to emergencies during practical exercises. The donation builds on the enduring AFP–RSIPF partnership and supports safer, more capable frontline policing for communities across Solomon Islands.
