PM Wale departs this afternoon for UN General Assembly in New York
Honiara, 16 September 2026 – Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Cooper Wale will depart Honiara this afternoon, Tuesday 16 September 2026, to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The Prime Minister will join more than 140 Heads of State and Government at the world’s largest diplomatic gathering to deliver Solomon Islands’ National Statement at the UN General Debate.
The UN General Assembly is the main forum where all 193 UN Member States set global priorities on peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, and international law.
For Solomon Islands, as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) and a Least Developed Country (LDC) on the frontline of climate change, UNGA provides a critical platform to amplify Pacific voices on climate change, sea-level rise and ocean governance, advocate for fairer access to climate finance and development financing, promote Solomon Islands’ interests on sustainable fisheries, forestry, and renewable energy, and reaffirm commitment to multilateralism, international law and the UN Charter.
Prime Minister Wale’s attendance is expected to deliver direct benefits for Solomon Islands, including:
- Strengthening bilateral partnerships through high-level meetings with development partners and donor countries;
- Advancing economic and trade cooperation, including foreign investment and market access opportunities;
- Mobilising support for national priorities under the GREAT Government’s policies, particularly climate resilience, infrastructure, health and education; and
- Attracting attention to the Pacific’s development needs ahead of key global financing decisions.
While in New York, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings on the margins of UNGA with leaders and senior representatives from partner countries, UN agencies and international organisations to advance matters of mutual interest.
