SIG, MCC discuss how to broaden economy
Officials from the Solomon Islands Government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) hold a high-level Threshold Program Advisory Council meeting recently where they discussed things relating to the Solomon Islands Threshold Program (SITHP).
The SITHP is a US$20 million program funded by the United States through the MCC in 2022. It aims to reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth by addressing constraints in the tourism and forestry sector.
The meeting brings Council members to review proposed refinements to program indicators, monitor frameworks and combined finance strategies designed to promote private sector participation from U.S. and international firms across hospitality, aviation, construction and carbon markets.
Since Solomon Islands relies heavily on logging and sells most of its round logs to a single trading partner, its economy faces vulnerability. The SITHP was introduced here to help the country diversify its economy through targeted investments.
There are two projects under the SITHP namely; Accessing Land for Tourism Investment Facilitation (ALTIF) project and Forest Value Enhancement Project (FoVEP).
The US$11.5 million ALTIF aims to address complex land tenure barriers that hindered tourism development by strengthening government capacity to identify investment-ready parcels, clarify land tenure and promote community trust. The project positions the Solomon Islands as a prime destination for sustainable international tourism and expanded investments.
On the other hand, the FoVEP represents a US$6.6 million investment designed to help communities transition toward stable and high-value alternative income sources.
The project expands market-based mechanisms to ensure Solomon Islands captures the full value of its timber resources. It also strengthens regulatory enforcement and piloted ecosystem payment systems with partners like Nakau and Live & Learn.
In his remarks at the opening of a meeting recently held at the Heritage Park Hotel, Minister for National Planning and Development Coordination (MNPDC), Hon. Peter Kenilorea Junior, highlighted the importance of ensuring that hotels, airlines and building companies find it easy to operate in the country.
Minister Kenilorea noted that it is vital to accelerate institutional reforms, advance blended finance investments and ensure strong community engagement to secure social licenses for sustainable investments.
The meeting has enabled the government and MCC to align ongoing program implementation with the government’s main priorities and the GREAT Coalition Policy statement.
