Garanga National Cattle Project Continues to Progress Despite Operational Challenges
The Garanga National Cattle Project, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MALD), continues to make steady progress as the supervising team, farm workers and contractors work together to advance pasture development, infrastructure and preparations for livestock production.
During the period from 15 to 31 August 2026, significant attention was given to the establishment and maintenance of pastures across the project paddocks.
Approximately 14 hectares of pasture have been established in Paddock 2, with different pasture species including Batiki, Koronivia, Guinea grass and other pasture varieties. The pasture plots are now around one month old and are showing encouraging signs of growth.
However, the recent dry-season conditions have affected some newly planted pasture areas, resulting in the loss of some plants. At the same time, weeds have begun to compete with the young pasture.
In response, the Garanga supervising team has started the contract labour groups to undertake weeding and clearing activities across more than 48 plots.
These efforts are aimed at protecting the newly established pastures and ensuring they develop into productive grazing areas.
Paddock 1 is also showing strong pasture development, with growth estimated at approximately 80 percent. Para grass has established particularly well, with some areas growing to more than one metre in height. Continued maintenance and final weeding will be important to sustain this progress.
Infrastructure development at the project site is also continuing. Construction of the residential building is nearing completion, while work on the storage area and small kitchen at the rear of the residence is progressing. Window frames and the ladder have been completed, with some finishing works, including rails, still outstanding.
Another important development was the arrival of farm tools and equipment from MV Onogou on 28 August 2026. The equipment was received at the Garanga/Kokota project site and later stocktaken by the supervising team with assistance from farm workers. The tools will support upcoming activities, particularly fencing, paddock maintenance and general farm operations.
Despite progress, the project continues to face challenges, particularly limited operational funding and the lack of OBM fuel. Nevertheless, the supervising team continues to explore practical options, including obtaining fuel on credit, to ensure essential field activities are not completely disrupted.
The next phase of work will focus on continued pasture maintenance, replacement planting, pathway clearing, fencing of paddocks and the stockyard, refuelling, and completion of the residential and storage facilities.
MALD acknowledges the efforts of the Garanga supervising team, casual workers and contractors who continue to contribute to the development of the project. Their commitment, together with the continued support of the MAL Executive and Director of Livestock, remains important to the successful advancement of the Garanga National Cattle Project.
The ongoing development demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening livestock production, improving pasture resources and establishing the necessary infrastructure to support sustainable cattle development in the country.
