The Minister of Home Affairs, responsible for Sports- Rev Honorable Manasseh Maelanga, attended the Opening Ceremony to the 23^rd Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland on the eve of the 23^rd July, 2026. This was after attending the 12^th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting from 21^st to 22^nd July. The Opening was a spectacular colorful event in which the Team Solomon Athletes were represented among 56 other Commonwealth Nations and Territories.

Glasgow welcomed the world on the eve of the 23^rd July with an unforgettable Opening Ceremony that blended Scotland’s rich cultural heritage with its forward‑looking spirit of innovation. Set against the backdrop of Scotland’s iconic landscapes and accompanied by the unmistakable sound of pipes and drums, the ceremony celebrated the nation’s traditions while showcasing its leadership in modern technology, engineering, and digital creativity.

Athletes from across the Commonwealth were greeted by a vibrant display of Scottish music, contemporary dance, and storytelling that highlighted themes of unity, resilience, and shared progress. The ceremony also featured cutting‑edge visual effects, immersive digital projections, and interactive lighting sequences developed by Scottish tech innovators, demonstrating how Scotland continues to push boundaries in creative technology.

The First Minister to the Scottish Parliament in his remarks praised the event as “a powerful reflection of who they are — a nation proud of its past and ambitious about its future.” His Majesty, King Charles III, officially declared the 23^rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow opened.

As the events unfolded over the days, Minister Maelanga was able to witness and cheered for athletes competing in their sports, including boxing, para power lifting and weight lifting. Other Team Solomon athletes will be competing in their events in the coming days. The Games is from 23^rd July to 2^nd August 2026 featuring 10 sports, 215 medal events and more than 3,000 athletes from across the Commonwealth.
