Road Segment from Central Market to HCC Reopened to Public
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) is pleased to announce that the road segment between Honiara Central Market and the Honiara City Council (HCC) area has been reopened to public use this afternoon following the completion of major construction works.
The reopening marks a significant milestone in the ongoing upgrade of Honiara’s road network and reflects continued progress in improving urban transport infrastructure within the capital city. The upgraded road section will enhance traffic flow, improve road safety, and provide better access for motorists, pedestrians, public transport operators, businesses, and market vendors.
The road closure was necessary to facilitate critical construction activities, including drainage improvements, road pavement works, and associated infrastructure upgrades. With the completion of these works, road users can now benefit from a safer, more efficient, and resilient transport corridor through one of Honiara’s busiest commercial areas.
With this section now open to traffic, the contractor will shift construction activities to the next phase of works, beginning with the seaside section of the Hotbread Roundabout, followed by the landside section extending from the Hotbread Roundabout to the HCC area. Traffic management measures will be implemented to ensure the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians while works are underway.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mr. Mike Qaqara, welcomed the reopening of the road and thanked the public for their cooperation throughout the construction period.
“The reopening of this important road section is another positive step towards improving transport infrastructure in Honiara. We acknowledge and sincerely thank road users, businesses, market vendors, and the general public for their patience and understanding while these essential works were being carried out. As we move into the next phase of construction around the Hotbread Roundabout area, we ask for the continued support and cooperation of the public. These improvements will contribute to safer roads, better traffic flow, and enhanced connectivity for our growing city.”
Mr. Qaqara also advised that the temporary bus stop located near the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) headquarters will remain in operation until further notice to support public transport services while construction activities continue.
The Ministry acknowledges the patience, understanding, and cooperation shown by businesses, commuters, market vendors, and the general public throughout the construction period. Their support has been instrumental in ensuring the successful delivery of the project.
The works form part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving transport connectivity and supporting economic development across Solomon Islands. The project is implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands.
Motorists are encouraged to continue exercising caution, obey traffic signs and road markings, and follow directions from traffic controllers as construction progresses into the next phase.
