New Cohorts Commenced Solomon Islands Field Epidemiology Training Program

The Solomon Islands Field Epidemiology Training Program (Sols FETP) on 8th June commenced with new cohort of training for nine fellows across the Country.
The new cohort consists of fellows from diverse levels in the health system, from Area Health Centres to National Programs. This reflects the program’s commitment to strengthening epidemiological capacity at all levels of the health system in Solomon Islands. Over the next 12 months, fellows will undertake hands-on training in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, data analysis, and public health response.
Ms Jemma Thompson from the Australian High Commission highlighted the critical role of field epidemiologists in safeguarding public health. Mr Rolly Viga mentioned how Sols FETP had been crucial to the country’s health security, with graduates recently involved in the response to Cyclone Maila.
Sols FETP combines intensive training workshops with field-based learning, enabling fellows to apply their knowledge directly within their workplace. High performing graduates from the previous cohorts are the trainers, delivering the training in Pijin and modified for the Solomon Islands context.
Fellows are from Nila Area Health Centre, Kira Kira Hospital, Atoifi Adventist Hospital, Gizo Hospital, NRH and National Programs within MHMS (TB/Leprosy Program and HIV/STI Program).
