World Vision Solomon Islands Donates Mosquito Nets to CSSI Inmates
The World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI) has donated twelve (12) bales of mosquito nets to the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) to support malaria prevention efforts within correctional centres.
The official handover ceremony took place recently, with the Provincial Communicable Disease Coordinator for World Vision, Mr. Cordrington Zezemu, presenting the mosquito nets to the Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands, Mr. Mactus Forau. The event was witnessed by senior CSSI Executive Members and World Vision staff.
Speaking during the handover, Mr. Zezemu emphasized the importance of the partnership between the World Vision Global Fund (WVGF) and the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands.
He stated that World Vision Global Fund is responsible for supporting the nationwide distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs), which was successfully carried out across the country since last year.
Mr. Zezemu noted that inmates are an important part of the Solomon Islands population and remain vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases. Therefore, it is essential that they are included in future LLIN distribution activities to ensure equitable access to malaria prevention services.
Mr. Zezemu further highlighted that WVGF plans to introduce the Men Care Training Program for inmates as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration process. The initiative aims to equip participants with practical life skills, promote positive behavioural change, and support their successful reintegration into their families and communities upon release.
“We look forward to working closely with the Officer-in-Charge of the Rove Central Correctional Centre Clinic and correctional staff in implementing this program,” says Mr. Zezemu.
“We believe the training will provide a valuable opportunity for inmates to reflect on their personal experiences, build confidence, and develop skills that will contribute positively to their future lives and overall well-being,” he added.
Commissioner Mactus Forau acknowledged and thanked World Vision Solomon Islands for its continued support in promoting malaria prevention and health awareness within correctional centres.
Commissioner Forau said the donation would significantly contribute to improving the health and welfare of inmates and staff by reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases within correctional facilities.
The donated mosquito nets will be distributed to inmates at the Rove Central Correctional Centre (RCCC) and Tetere Correctional Centre (TCC).
