GG hails respondents in solidarity with Cyclone Maila victims

Honiara, 16 June 2026 – The Governor-General, His Excellency, Sir David Tiva Kapu, has acknowledged the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Maila and thanked all respondents for supporting affected communities.

In his King’s Birthday speech on Friday, Sir David said April’s cyclone caused severe damage and disruption in Choiseul and Western Provinces, and parts of Isabel, Guadalcanal and Central Islands Provinces.

He thanked the Solomon Islands Government, development partners, NGOs, churches, individuals and communities for relief efforts and recovery coordination.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the Government’s leadership, commitment, and support during this difficult time,” he said.

He said efforts to assist families, provide relief supplies, and coordinate recovery actions are “deeply valued.”

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Choiseul Province and Western Province and recognise the importance of continued support to help communities recover and rebuild,” Sir David said.

Sir David’s remarks came as the Government works with the World Bank and ADB to secure emergency financing for Maila recovery. He urged sustained partnership to ensure assistance reaches those most in need.

The cyclone response remains a priority as the new government begins its term with two years before the next election.
