CSSI ERG Officers Undergo Physical Fitness Training and Health Management Programme
The Emergency Response Group (ERG) of the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) has commenced a Physical Fitness Training and Health Management Programme at the Correctional Service Training Academy (CSTA) in Honiara.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Commissioner of the Correctional Service Solomon Islands, Mr. Mactus Forau, commended the Commissioner of the Chinese Police Liaison Team (CPLT) and his Instructors for their continued support, partnership, and commitment to developing the capabilities of CSSI officers.
“Your contribution to this important training reflects the strong cooperation and friendship that exists between our two organisations,” says Commissioner Forau.
He described the programme as an important milestone for CSSI as it continues efforts to strengthen the professionalism, health, and operational readiness of its workforce.
Commissioner Forau noted that CSSI is increasingly concerned about the growing number of officers affected by health-related conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and other lifestyle-related illnesses. These conditions not only affect individual wellbeing but also impact operational effectiveness and, sadly, have contributed to the loss of valued officers at a relatively young age.
“This training is both timely and necessary. It supports our commitment to creating a healthier workforce capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of correctional service,”
He emphasised that physical fitness is not simply about passing tests or participating in exercise, but about maintaining the strength, resilience, discipline, and endurance required to perform duties safely and effectively.
Commissioner Forau encouraged participants to take full advantage of both the theoretical and practical components of the programme with dedication, professionalism, and an open mind.
“Learn as much as possible from the CPLT instructors and be prepared to share that knowledge with your colleagues when you return to your respective units and correctional centres”.
Also speaking at the opening, CPLT Commissioner Mr. Shenghuang Liu, commended CSSI Executives for their unwavering support and trust, which he described as the foundation of the strong partnership between the two organisations.
Commissioner Liu acknowledged the leadership of Commissioner Forau and the significant progress CSSI has achieved in its overall development.
“Time and again, the CSSI has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force during critical moments, helping to safeguard the peace, security, and stability of Solomon Islands. Through these shared experiences, a strong and enduring friendship has been forged between the CPLT and CSSI”, says Commissioner Liu.
He explained that the training programme had been carefully designed to be scientific, practical, and highly effective, with direct relevance to correctional duties and emergency response operations.
“We have integrated scientific fitness principles and sports injury prevention measures into the programme. Our goal is to help participants correct unscientific exercise habits and equip them with the knowledge and skills required to conduct effective and efficient training independently”.
Commissioner Liu added that the programme aims not only to build physical strength and improve operational readiness but also to promote long-term health and wellbeing among officers.
“We hope this training will deliver lasting benefits for all participants and that the cooperation between the CPLT and the CSSI will continue to grow from strength to strength”.
The training programme is designed not only to improve individual fitness levels but, more importantly, to qualify participants as Certified Physical Training Instructors, enabling them to support and enhance fitness programmes throughout the organisation.
