AUSTRALIAN-SUPPORTED WASH FACILITIES IMPROVE CONDITIONS AT CENTRAL ISLANDS SCHOOLS
More than 400 students and teachers at Boromole Primary School and McMahon Community High School (CHS) in Central Islands Province now have access to improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, with support from the Australian Government.
Delivered by UNICEF in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), the initiative is helping create safer, healthier and more inclusive school environments.
At Boromole Primary School, 124 students and 10 teachers are benefiting from newly constructed ablution facilities, including a rainwater harvesting system, upgraded water supply and group handwashing station.
McMahon CHS in Tulagi has also received a new six-unit ablution block with handwashing facilities, benefiting 286 students and 11 teachers.
MEHRD encouraged schools to maintain the facilities and promote good hygiene practices.
“A safe and healthy learning environment is essential for student wellbeing and educational outcomes,” a MEHRD spokesperson said.
Acting Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Schloeffel, reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to improving essential services in schools.
“Every child should be able to access clean water and sanitation facilities at school,” the Acting High Commissioner Schloeffel said.
“The Solomon Islands Government is working hard to bring these facilities to more and more children across the country, and Australia is proud to be supporting that work, along with our partners at UNICEF.”
Boromole Primary School and McMahon CHS are among schools across Buena Vista and Ngella benefiting from this investment. The program is improving access to clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene services, in line with national standards.
