Manele urges unity, respect, and continued investment as Solomon Islands prepares for PM transition

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Caretaker Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has urged Solomon Islanders to maintain unity and respect amidst the country’s political transition, as the nation prepares to elect a new leader on Friday.

In his final press conference on Wednesday, Manele reflected on his tenure, saying he had fulfilled his pledge to uphold the rule of law and facilitate a peaceful transition.

“We have navigated legal challenges and political shifts through the courts and the floor of Parliament, and not through the streets,” he said.

Manele emphasised the importance of respecting the democratic process, saying “Leadership is not about holding onto a position or a title; it is about understanding what the country needs at the right moment to maintain unity, stability, and progress.”

He called on citizens to prioritise the well-being of their families and communities, and to avoid letting political differences divide them.

“The well-being of our people and the security of our families must remain our common purpose,” he said.

Manele assured investors and partners that the Solomon Islands remains open for business, saying the country is committed to maintaining a stable and secure environment for investment, development, and economic growth.

The caretaker Prime Minister also urged young people to engage in politics responsibly and respectfully, saying, “Speak your mind and stand up for what you believe in, but always do so with responsibility and respect for your fellow citizens, leadership at all levels and the institutions that guide our nation.”

Manele nominated Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka as the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) candidate for Prime Minister, saying this would ensure continuity in vital programs and services.

As the country prepares for the election of a new leader, Manele urged citizens to respect the choice made by their elected Members of Parliament, saying, “Leadership is not about holding onto a position or a title; it is about understanding what the country needs at the right moment to maintain unity, stability, and progress.”
