Commissioner Mactus Forau Visits Gizo Correctional Centre
The Commissioner of the Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI), Mr. Mactus Forau, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Gizo Correctional Centre (GCC) in Western Province.
During the visit, Commissioner Forau thanked the Commandant for the comprehensive briefing and commended the management and staff for their commitment, dedication, and commendable efforts in maintaining security and stability at the centre.
Commissioner Forau emphasized that one of the organisation’s key flagship priorities is to strengthen discipline across all levels. He highlighted that discipline must be upheld not only by officers but also by inmates, noting that it remains the foundation and backbone of any disciplined organisation worldwide.
The Commissioner also raised concerns regarding overcrowding in correctional facilities, stating that the increasing inmate population necessitates the expansion of existing infrastructure to effectively address this ongoing challenge.
Furthermore, Commissioner Forau urged the Western Provincial Government to prioritise the relocation of the Gizo Correctional Centre to the proposed site at Jah Mountain. He noted that such a move would mitigate risks associated with natural disasters, including cyclones and tsunamis, and ensure the long-term safety and sustainability of the facility.
In addition, the Commissioner highlighted the importance of introducing and implementing Community Sentence Justice (CSJ) as an alternative sentencing approach. He stated that CSJ could help alleviate pressure on correctional facilities by reducing overcrowding and associated costs, while also holding offenders accountable and equipping them with practical skills and a stronger sense of community responsibility.
Gizo Correctional Centre Commandant, Mr. Ian Qoloni, expressed his sincere appreciation for the Commissioner’s visit and acknowledged the continued moral and administrative support provided by the CSSI Executive Office.
