CSSI officers complete Mental Health Training
Special Management Unit (SMU) officers of the Rove Central Correctional Centre (RCCC) have recently completed a Mental Health Training program conducted at the Correctional Service Training Academy (CSTA) in Rove, Honiara.
The training was specifically designed for officers who work closely with inmates housed in the Special Management Unit and who are affected by mental health conditions.
The program covered a range of key topics, including:
- Understanding Health and Mental Health
- Strength base approach
- Mental Health Perspective
- Mental Health Diagnosis
- Mental Health Awareness
- Mental Health and Human Brain
- Living with someone who is mental ill in a crisis
- How to live with someone who is mental ill and cause of mental illness
Upon completion of the training, officers are now better equipped to identify basic mental health problems and to provide essential mental health support and management to inmates under their care.
During his presentation, Dr. Paul highlighted the vital role played by SMU officers, stating:
“A champion is someone who deals with challenging situations in life. In this situation, you are the champions, because you live with and deal with one of the most challenging circumstances. Those who have not gone through the same experience may not fully understand what it is like to face such situations. Therefore, you must see yourselves as champions—full of tolerance, love, compassion, resilience, accommodation, and understanding.”
SMU Overall In-Charge, Senior Sergeant Isaac Kiriau, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Paul, Dr. Ronny, NRH Medical Staff Mrs. Serema Prath, and RCCC Medical Senior Sergeant Willie Kane for their commitment and dedication in facilitating the training.
“There is a high need for my staff to undergo this type of training to help them manage mental health challenges encountered within the cell blocks,” says Kiriau.
He also extended his appreciation to the Office of the Commissioner for supporting the program and acknowledged his officers for their active participation in this important training.
