Kirakira Wharf Construction Reaches 66.35% Completion; Stakeholders Emphasize Resilience Against Severe Weather
A joint team comprising National Safeguards Consultant at the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), the Construction Supervision Consultant (CSC-KEI-TEDI) of the Land Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) recently conducted a visit to the Kirakira Wharf Project from August 7th to 9th, 2025.
This trip was purposely to update the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) members on the progress of the wharf construction phase.
The team first paid a courtesy visit to Makira-Ulawa Province Premier Stanley Siapu and executive members to update them on the Wharf Project’s progress.
Premier Siapu expressed appreciation for the project’s progress and reiterated the boost to economic activities it will bring once completed.
The 4th CAC meeting updated members on the project’s status, standing at 66.35%, and expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
Remaining work includes wharf lighting, two mooring dolphins, a passenger terminal, an access road, a market area, and parking facilities.
A CSC representative explained to the committee members the delays affecting progress, such as redesigning, material clearance, controlling invasive species, and the adverse weather conditions experienced lately.
The meeting emphasized continuous collaboration by stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of this ADB-sourced maritime project that aligns with the government’s national transport plan 2017–2035.
Committee members also stressed the importance of building a severe-weather-resilient waterfront structure to withstand the island’s unforgiving weather conditions, citing Kaonasugu and Moli wharves being washed out by high swells during storms.
The joint team further inspected the contractor’s camp and construction site, confirming compliance with safety and environmental standards.
The maritime component of the LMCP includes the Bellona Wharf and the major upgrade for the Honiara seaport.
