Prime Minister Manele Engages in Diplomatic Talks with Fiji and Cook Islands

HONIARA, Solomon Islands, April 16, 2025 — Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele has successfully engaged in diplomatic talks with the Prime Ministers of Fiji and the Cook Islands, reinforcing Solomon Islands’ commitment to fostering strong regional partnerships ahead of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in Honiara this September.

These discussions, held on the margins of the 2nd TROIKA meeting in Nadi, focused on key issues of mutual interest, including labor mobility, regional security, and strengthening bilateral ties between the countries. Prime Minister Manele emphasized the importance of collaboration within the Pacific Islands region, particularly as the Solomon Islands prepares to host the high-level Forum later this year.

A key focus of Prime Minister Manele’s meeting with Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was the review of the Air Services Agreement, which will further enhance connectivity and trade between the two countries. Additionally, discussions covered bilateral security arrangements, ensuring that both nations are well-positioned to address regional security concerns effectively.

“Our relationship with Fiji is crucial in maintaining the stability and prosperity of the Pacific region. Strengthening our security and transport links will not only benefit our two nations but also contribute to the broader Pacific Islands region,” Prime Minister Manele said.

The bilateral talks also touched on Solomon Islands’ role in ensuring the success of the 54th PIF, with both leaders agreeing on the importance of a united Pacific voice in international fora.

Meeting with Cook Islands

During his meeting with Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, Prime Minister Manele congratulated the Cook Islands on its upcoming 60th Constitutional Day celebrations and discussed opportunities for increased labor mobility between the two countries.

Solomon Islands and the Cook Islands share a mutual interest in expanding labor mobility programs to provide economic opportunities for their citizens while addressing workforce shortages in both countries. The two leaders expressed their commitment to ongoing cooperation and agreed to continue close communication on these issues.

“The Cook Islands and Solomon Islands share common challenges and opportunities. By working together, we can create meaningful solutions that benefit our people, particularly through labor mobility and economic partnerships,” Prime Minister Manele stated.

Both meetings highlighted Solomon Islands’ role as a leader in the Pacific, with Prime Minister Manele emphasizing that the 54th PIF will serve as an important opportunity for the region to showcase its solidarity and collective priorities.
