Solomon Islands Community in Port Moresby celebrates 48th Independence Anniversary
The Solomon Islands High Commission in Papua New Guinea joined members of the Solomon Islands community in Port Moresby to celebrate Solomon Islands’ 48th Independence Anniversary at Pacific Adventist University on 5 July 2026.
Hosted by the Solomon Islands Students and Staff Association (SISSA), the celebration brought together Solomon Islands workers, students, families and friends under the national theme, “One Nation, Our Responsibility and Accountability – Building a GREAT Solomon Islands.”
In his address, Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency William Soaki, encouraged Solomon Islanders to remain united and continue serving as proud ambassadors of their country.
He also highlighted the strong and enduring friendship between Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, reaffirming the importance of recent bilateral cooperation, including the Framework Agreement on Development and Economic Cooperation and the launch of Solomon Airlines’ direct Honiara–Port Moresby service.
Vice Chancellor of Pacific Adventist University, Professor Lohi Matainaho, congratulated the Government and people of Solomon Islands on the country’s 48th Independence Anniversary and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to educating Solomon Islands students and strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries.
The celebration concluded with cultural performances, sporting activities, the ceremonial cutting of the Independence cake and the lowering of the National Flag, reflecting the unity and vibrant spirit of the Solomon Islands community in Papua New Guinea.
