SOLOMON ISLANDS PARTICPATED IN PACIFIC NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN (NBSAP) DIALOGUE TO ALIGN TO KUNMING MONTREAL GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY FRAMEWORK (KMGBF)
NADI, Fiji 21st March 2024-Pacific Island countries including Solomon Islands representatives are convening in Nadi, Fiji (18th -26th March) to embark on a dialogue to align their national targets to achieving the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) targets under the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). Solomon Islands delegation comprised of officials from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources & the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock.
Amidst a dangerous decline in nature threatening the survival of 1 million species and impacting the lives of billions of people, the KMGBF aims to halt and reverse nature loss. The framework consists of global targets to be achieved by 2030 and beyond to safeguard and sustainably use biodiversity. Four overarching goals to be achieved by 2050 focus on ecosystem and species health including to halt human-induced species extinction, the sustainable use of biodiversity, equitable sharing of benefits, and on implementation and finance to include closing the biodiversity finance gap of $700 billion per year.
Solomon Islands and other Pacific Island countries are into a week-long discussion to share experiences and lessons learned to align their national targets which is implemented through the National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan (NBSAP). Solomon Islands NBSAP was last updated in 2016-2020. This is a key national strategic plan endorsed by the Government as an overarching policy document for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation across all sectors.
It is expected that the Solomon Islands NBSAP will be updated soon to achieve both KMGBF targets and guide the country to address threats of biodiversity loss at the national level. It is emphasized that it should be a whole of the society & whole of the government approach to develop national targets and revised the NBSAP accordingly. The Pacific dialogue has certainly contributed to commence preparations towards the NBSAP process.
Solomon Islands through the Ministry of Environment (MECDM) has started the process to recruit NBSAP Officer, revived the NBSAP Committee and is engaging a local consultant to review and assist in setting national targets to achieve the KMGBF targets.
