MFMR staff participated in International Fisheries Negotiation Training
Staff of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource last week participated in the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) organised regional International Fisheries Negotiations Training.
FFA Director General Dr Manu Tupou-Roosen in her opening remarks emphasized the importance of this course saying that participants need to be equipped with sound negotiations skills to be able to advocate and protect our valuable tuna resources.
She said stakes are high and there is no room for complacency adding it is important that officials continue to upgrade their knowledge to protect this important resource for the future.
The four days training has enabled participants build their capacity to prepare and participate effectively in international fisheries negotiations and to negotiate in support of their national and regional interests.
It is hoped that this regional course will contribute to FFA’s overall objectives and vision by enhancing the skills of its members to achieve their national and regional aspirations, including maximising their economic returns from their tuna fishery.
The participants from the Ministry of Fisheries included the Deputy Secretary Technical, Ms Rosalie Masu, Deputy Director Policy Planning, Ms Ronnelle Panda, Senior Legal Officer, Ms Rinah Mark, Deputy Director (supervising) Inshore Fisheries, Ms Ivory Akao, Mr Allan Aba (CFO Policy) and Ms Rieka Kwalai (SFO- Policy).
Other line Ministries who also participated in this regional training included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade and Attorney General’s Chambers.
