ADB-Supported Project Strengthens Water Security in Noro
Access to clean, reliable water in Western Province received a major boost with the official commissioning of the Noro Water Supply Upgrade Project last Thursday, marking a milestone in provincial water security.
Delivered under the Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project—a landmark joint initiative supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Union, the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, and the Government of Solomon Islands—the project enhances water service delivery across Noro’s households, schools, and business facilities.
As a premier industrial and fisheries hub, Noro’s economic trajectory relies heavily on resilient municipal utilities. The upgraded infrastructure is designed to relieve distribution pressures, expand access to safe drinking water, improve community health outcomes, and bolster climate resilience against environmental challenges.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, ADB Country Director Anthony Gill highlighted the strategic importance of extending major infrastructure investments to provincial economic centers.
“Noro is one of Solomon Islands’ most important economic centers, and today’s commissioning demonstrates our shared commitment to ensuring that communities in provincial centers are not left behind in national development efforts.
“ADB remains committed to supporting Solomon Islands in achieving its development ambitions and ensuring that access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water services becomes a reality for all communities.”
Minister for the Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Rural Electrification Derrick Manu’ari, in the keynote address, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening sustainable water resource management and expanding essential infrastructure beyond Honiara.
“This project stands as a lasting symbol of what can be achieved through genuine partnership, community ownership, responsible stewardship, and shared prosperity.”
Noro Town Council Clerk Gavin Totu welcomed the commissioning of the new facility, saying it will improve access to safe, reliable water and support the township’s health, business activity, and future growth.
He thanked project partners and urged residents and businesses to help protect and maintain the facility for lasting community benefit.
The commissioning reflects strong multi-stakeholder collaboration between government authorities, Solomon Water, international financing partners, and landowning communities.
Moving forward, Solomon Water will oversee ongoing operation and asset management to guarantee long-term service sustainability for the town.
The project forms part of a wider water infrastructure upgrade, alongside Honiara’s three reservoirs (Titinge, Tasahe, and Panatina) and upgraded trunk mains, commissioned last Tuesday to strengthen water security, improve reliable service for more than 105,000 residents, and support the capital’s future growth.
ADB is a leading multilateral development bank supporting sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth across Asia and the Pacific. Working with its members and partners to solve complex challenges together, ADB harnesses innovative financial tools and strategic partnerships to transform lives, build quality infrastructure, and safeguard our planet.
