Solomon Islands Government Deploys Emergency Drought Relief and Water Security Mission to Rennell and Bellona Province
HONIARA, Solomon Islands — The Solomon Islands Government, through the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), in the Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) is leading an emergency drought relief and water security mission to Rennell and Bellona Province from 18 to 25 October 2026 to support drought-affected communities and strengthen access to safe drinking water and essential services.
The mission comes amid prolonged meteorological drought conditions affecting the province, with Bellona Island experiencing severe water shortages. The shortages have disrupted essential services, including temporary school closures due to inadequate water supplies.
The mission will be undertaken in collaboration with the Government of Australia, through the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), as well as Respond Global, provincial authorities and constituency representatives.
The vessel MV Helpr-1, operated by Respond Global, will serve as the primary maritime logistics and water support platform. Equipped with desalination capability to produce approximately 14,000 litres of water per day and a storage capacity of 26,000 litres, the vessel will support emergency water production, transportation and distribution operations.
The mission will prioritise schools, health facilities and vulnerable communities on Bellona Island, with activities including emergency drinking-water distribution, installation of additional water-storage tanks, repairs and maintenance of existing water systems, and medical outreach services to support provincial health services.
A technical assessment will also be conducted on Rennell Island to examine selected water sources, including cave-water sources, through water sampling and quality testing. The findings will help determine the suitability of existing sources and inform future water security and drought-response interventions.
The mission will further assess infrastructure conditions, operational requirements and outstanding community needs to support the Government’s planning for continued drought response and recovery.
The operations will be coordinated by NDMO in collaboration with participating agencies and local authorities. The mission is scheduled to conclude on 25 November 2026, with assessment findings and recommendations to inform decisions on subsequent interventions.
The Solomon Islands Government recognises the importance of coordinated humanitarian assistance, reliable water supplies and resilient essential services in supporting communities affected by drought. The mission represents a coordinated effort to address immediate humanitarian needs while strengthening the information and practical options available for longer-term water security in Rennell and Bellona Province.
