TC Maila recovery phase to rebuild around 1300 destroyed homes in Western and Choiseul Provinces
Honiara, 5 September 2025 – The National Government, through the National Disaster Council (NDC), is expected to rebuild around 1300 dwelling homes destroyed by tropical cyclone Maila in April this year in Western and Choiseul Provinces.
NDC Chair and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, David Hiba Hiriasia, said initial assessments by Provincial Disaster Authorities indicate approximately 1,300 homes were destroyed and damaged.
The Government has allocated SB$75 million that will be channeled through a National Disaster Special Fund, managed by the National Disaster Council through and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT), to rebuild the livelihoods of affected families in the two provinces.
Mr. Hiriasia said the Government’s recovery program will begin as soon as final approval for funding is received from the MoFT. Procurement planning is already in progress and will be followed by the delivery of project materials to beneficiaries in the two provinces.
The GREAT coalition is committed to this rebuilding Programme and has reaffirmed that the special disaster fund will be strictly managed to ensure it meets its intended purposes.
PS Hiriasia said other infrastructure such as school buildings and health clinics will also be rebuilt under the recovery Programme but from additional financial Government and donor support.
He assured affected communities that rebuilding is coming and thanked them for their patience and understanding as the Government works hard to ensure funds are secured and made available for the Programme.
He thanked the development partners for providing funds to support the Governments shelter recovery Programme.
