Trade Negotiation Seminar Ends with Focus on Applying Skills
Government officials have been encouraged to apply the knowledge and practical skills gained from a five-day national seminar to strengthen Solomon Islands’ participation in future international trade negotiations.
The National Seminar on Solomon Islands’ Fourth Trade Policy Review Follow-up and WTO Trade Negotiations, held from 28 September to 2 October at the Outback Resort Hotel in Honiara, brought together officials from government ministries and agencies.
With support from the World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat, participants explored the WTO system, decision-making processes and practical approaches to trade negotiations.
The programme included practical exercises, discussions and negotiation simulations, allowing participants to apply negotiation techniques and consider issues including preparation, communication, national interests and coordination.
In closing the seminar, Human Resources Manager of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Catherine Tugumana, encouraged participants to carry the knowledge and skills gained into their respective areas of work and future bilateral, regional and multilateral negotiations.
She said the effectiveness of Solomon Islands’ engagement in international trade would depend not only on the agreements negotiated, but also on the country’s ability to prepare well, coordinate effectively and negotiate from a clear understanding of its national priorities.
The Ministry acknowledged the WTO Secretariat, facilitators, organisers and participating ministries and agencies for their contribution to the seminar.
