Minister Wasi Announces Ambitious Target to Establish 10,000 Hectares of New Cocoa and Coconut Plantations
The Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Honourable Franklyn Derek Wasi, has announced the Government’s ambitious target to establish 10,000 hectares of new cocoa and coconut plantations across the country as part of the GREAT Coalition Government’s strategy to revitalize the agriculture sector and drive sustainable economic growth.
Delivering his ministerial response to the Speech from the Throne in Parliament today, Minister Wasi said the initiative forms a key pillar of the Government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture, creating rural employment, increasing export earnings, and improving the livelihoods of Solomon Islanders.
“Our traditional cash crops, cocoa and coconut, remain among the country’s most valuable agricultural export commodities. The Government is committed to supporting the establishment of new plantations while rehabilitating aging farms through improved planting materials, farmer support programmes, and better pest and disease management,” he said.
He added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development will expand nurseries, improve drying and storage facilities, and strengthen extension services to help farmers increase productivity and improve the quality of their produce.
He said the 10,000-hectare target will contribute significantly to increase agricultural exports, enhancing food and income security, and supporting rural economic development across all provinces.
Minister Wasi reaffirmed that the GREAT Coalition Government remains committed to building a modern, resilient, and commercially competitive agriculture sector through strategic investments, partnerships, and practical support for farmers, ensuring agriculture continues to serve as a cornerstone of Solomon Islands economic transformation.
