A former Police Sergeant Mr. Aitorea sworn in as the acting commissioner of RSIPF

Mr James Aitorea was sworn in as the acting commissioner of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) before the Governor General Sir David Tiva Kapu administered the oath at Government House on 6 July 2026.

Mr Aitorea, a former police sergeant who resigned some years ago, has been appointed as acting police commissioner whilst the substantive postholder Mr Ian Vaevaso is currently on suspension.

He took his oaths before His Excellency the Governor-General Sir David Tiva Kapu to formalise his acting appointment as advised by the Prime Minister, Hon Matthew Cooper Wale, under Sections 43(1) and (2) of the SI Constitution.

In his new role, Aitorea expressed his commitment to enhancing community safety and strengthening the relationship between the police and the public.

He outlined plans to address pressing issues such as crime prevention and police accountability during his tenure.

Aitorea emphasised the importance of collaborating with local communities and stakeholders to foster trust and transparency within the police force.

He also highlighted his intention to implement training programmes aimed at improving the skills and professionalism of police officers across the country.

Acting Commissioner Aitorea said, “This proactive approach is expected to not only reduce crime rates but also create an environment where citizens feel empowered to engage with law enforcement.”

“By prioritising open dialogue and community involvement, Aitorea aims to build a safer and more inclusive society for all,” said the new acting commissioner.
