Successful Signing of Memorandum of Understanding Between Solomon Islands Government and the United States Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency US/DPAA

The Solomon Islands Government (SIG) is pleased to announce the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET), and the United States Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) for the conduct of search and recovery of missing United States personnel from World War II in Solomon Islands.
The signing ceremony, held in Honiara today Wednesday 03rd June 2026, marks a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Solomon Islands and the United States in advancing humanitarian, historical, and cultural objectives.
The MOU was signed on behalf of the Solomon Islands Government by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Mr. Bunyan Sivoro, who serves as the Government’s focal point of contact for DPAA engagements in the country. Representing the United States Government, the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Honiara, His Excellency Dan P. O’Hara, signed on behalf of DPAA.
This MOU establishes a formal framework for cooperation, coordination, and compliance in conducting search and recovery missions across Solomon Islands. It ensures that all activities are undertaken: In accordance with Solomon Islands laws and regulations, With full respect for cultural heritage and local communities, Through coordinated engagement with relevant government authorities.
The agreement also underscores the Solomon Islands Government’s commitment to preserving historical integrity while contributing to humanitarian efforts of international importance.
Speaking during the signing, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Mr. Sivoro acknowledged the importance of the partnership:
“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to honouring those who were lost during World War II, while ensuring that all recovery efforts respect the cultural heritage and sovereignty of Solomon Islands. It also strengthens our institutional cooperation with the United States.”
His Excellency Dan P. O’Hara expressed appreciation on behalf of the United States Government:
