Relief maintenance works for the Vura-Naha Road in East Honiara commences

A local contractor has mobilised over the weekend to commence relief maintenance works along the Vura-Naha Road in eastern Honiara.
The ministry’s Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD), in a statement today, acknowledges the ongoing concern of East Honiara residents and road users along this road stretch and its deteriorating state.
“A local contractor is now on-site with their machinery and road crew, first kicking off by ripping the worst sections spanning from the Kukum SDA bus stop and continuing right up to Kobito and borderline market junctions, down to Naha Birthing Centre and Naha 4 junction.
“While budget constraints remain a challenge, we are prioritizing this critical area first to ensure the public can move safely.”

The statement clarifies that this relief work is just on a temporary basis while a full rehabilitation of the Vura Road and drainage will be undertaken by the Community Access for Urban Services Enhancement Project (CAUSE II) in the following months.
The Vura Road and drainage work plan under Component 1 of the CAUSE II project will be finalised in the middle of next month, following the survey and design needed to start the tender process.
“This full rehabilitation will start from the SDA bus stop all the way to the Naha 4 road intersection,” the statement said.
It also includes upgrading the Kobito Bridge.
The statement also adds that a major challenge for Vura Road is encroachment by several property owners, which obstructs the main drainage system.
“We look forward to this CAUSE II rehabilitation project to address and resolve this longstanding issue.”
Road users along this stretch are urged to adhere to traffic signs and instructions from the road crew during this urgent relief to ensure trafficability and ease of movement for East Honiara communities.
