RSIPF and Karaena Community Forge Strong Partnership to Combat Crime

Leaders from the Karaina community met with the Commissioner of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), Mr. Ian Vaevaso, on 25 May 2026 to strengthen community policing partnerships and enhance the local security environment.

The strategic engagement focused on empowering community leaders to combat crime through the enforcement of localized community policing by-laws across their respective areas.

During the session, representatives from the Holau Education Center, alongside local youth advocates, formally presented a partnership proposal to the RSIPF leadership.

The proposal requests targeted police-led awareness campaigns to address critical security vulnerabilities in the Karaena area.

Community leaders highlighted that the illicit distillation of ‘kwaso’ and the sale of marijuana are severely impacting local youth, driving a rise in anti-social behaviour and criminal activities.

The RSIPF Commissioner commended the Karaena community leaders and the Holau Education Centre for their proactive leadership and commitment to collaborating with Police. He emphasized that the RSIPF welcomes all community frameworks dedicated to fostering peace, stability, and redirecting youth energy toward positive, constructive civic engagement.

Commissioner Vaevaso stated that active, vigilant community leaders serve as vital auxiliary eyes and ears for the police, providing critical intelligence that enables formal investigations, targeted raids, and lawful arrests.

The RSIPF extended a national invitation to the public and all communities across Honiara and the wider Solomon Islands to establish similar partnerships.

The police urge citizens to join the community policing network, emphasizing that collective civic responsibility is essential to driving down crime and ensuring long-term community safety and peace.
