Road Relief in Action: MID Mobilizes Contractors to Stabilize Key Routes

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID) Transport Infrastructure Management Division (TIMSD) has intensified its road relief after the recent heavy rainfall affecting road networks across Honiara city.
Local contractors have been deployed since last week to execute grading, resurfacing, drainage clean-up and cold-patching works. These relief works are part of a broader strategy to stabilise and maintain trafficability and the safety of road users on main road networks, both sealed and unsealed roads, while long-term maintenance and rehabilitation projects are finalised.
These relief operations were divided into 20 lots that were identified as high-traffic zones across East, Central and West Honiara.
“We thank the public for their support and remind all motorists to drive safely and adhere to temporary traffic signs near work zones,” the supervising permanent secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Mike Qaqara said.
He added, “While budget constraints remain a challenge, we are prioritising the most critical road network first to ensure the public can move safely.”
Meanwhile, to ease the traffic congestion along the Mendana Avenue Road due to the ongoing road upgrade works under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, the Road Transport Board Taskforce is rolling out traffic control measures. These measures aim to reduce peak-hour congestion and eliminate unnecessary delays along the main highway.
“Road users must adhere to the traffic diversion and cooperate with officers on-site as this project reaches a critical point towards its completion,” Mr. Qaqara said.
