NDMO Provides Update on Relief Operations and Damage Assessments Following Tropical Cyclone Maila

HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has released a progress update on the relief operations and Initial Damage Assessments (IDA) currently being conducted across several provinces in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Maila. While significant progress has been achieved in multiple regions, dedicated teams continue to work tirelessly to reach all affected communities.

In Western Province Relief and IDA activities are in full swing. As of yesterday, the final two assessment teams were dispatched to the remote islands of Simbo and Kolobangara, marking the final stage of the assessment phase for these areas.

For Choiseul Province the field assessment phase of the IDA is now complete. Technical teams have transitioned to analyzing the collected data, which will be essential for determining long-term recovery needs and resource allocation.

Meanwhile in Isabel province operations have scaled up significantly this week following the receipt of national support. A total of 10 teams have been deployed across 16 wards to document the impact on local infrastructure and livelihoods.

For Guadalcanal Province assessments are currently ongoing, sustained by financial support from the provincial government while national funding is still pending.

While most provinces are now well into their IDA activities Central Province have not yet started. However, teams remain on standby awaiting the release of necessary funds to begin the assessment process.

The government remains fully committed to completing these assessments with urgency. Timely completion is critical to facilitating the delivery of essential aid and initiating vital recovery efforts for the affected populations.
