Mendana Avenue Road Upgrade Works Update: Heritage Park Roundabout Reopened as Construction Continues Towards City Council Roundabout
Construction works continue on the adjacent landside section between CBSI and National Provident Fund (NPF) Plaza. Current activities include the installation of roadside kerbs and preparation of pavement layers in readiness for final asphalt surfacing.
The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is prioritising completion of this section before progressing to the next phase, which will extend from Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) Junction through to the Hotbread Roundabout.
Pending the installation of traffic signs and road markings, the newly constructed Heritage Park (HP) roundabout is now fully complete and open to the public as of this morning. This marks another key milestone under the ongoing road upgrade works in Honiara implemented through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
The opening of the roundabout significantly improves traffic circulation within the central business district. Motorists travelling along Hibiscus Avenue Road and wishing to return towards the Point Cruz area may now use the corridor between the Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) and Our Telekom Sales Office to access the roundabout and head eastward. Vehicles heading towards west Honiara should continue along the Hibiscus Road, turn right at Town Ground, and then proceed left onto the West Side route. The Ministry of Finance and Treasury roundabout can also be used as an alternative turning point for vehicles returning to the Point Cruz/Central Market areas.
Meanwhile, construction works continue on the adjacent landside section between CBSI and National Provident Fund (NPF) Plaza. Current activities include the installation of roadside kerbs and preparation of pavement layers in readiness for final asphalt surfacing. This road section has far exceeded its design lifespan. The foundation is no longer reliable, which is why potholes and crocodile cracks are appearing all over the road pavement. With this upgrade, it improves road strength, durability, and the carriageway to safely accommodate increasing traffic volumes.
The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is prioritising completion of this section before progressing to the next phase, which will extend from Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) Junction through to the Hotbread Roundabout. Works will continue in a planned, staged sequence right up to Honiara City Council Roundabout.
Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mike Qaqara, welcomed the completion of the HP roundabout, describing it as an important improvement for traffic flow and road safety in the capital.
“The opening of this roundabout will ease congestion in a busy part of the city while improving safety for all road users.”
He added that the broader road upgrade is aimed at delivering long-term resilience for the transport network.
“We are focused on building roads that are more resilient to weather conditions and capable of supporting increasing traffic demand.”
While every effort is being made to minimise disruption, motorists may still experience temporary delays and congestion due to limited working space, weather conditions, and other concurrent non-LMCP activities within Honiara.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as works continue, and we assure everyone that the end result will be a safer and more reliable road network,” Mr Qaqara said.
Road users are reminded to exercise caution when travelling through active work zones, obey all traffic signage, observe speed limits, and follow instructions from traffic controllers and the Road Transport Board (RTB) taskforce to ensure safety.
