PRIME MINISTER MANELE VISITS WESTERN PROVINCE

Honiara, Solomon Islands, Saturday 18 April 2026 – Prime Minister, Hon. Jeremiah Manele, has today arrived in Western Province as part of his visit to meet with communities affected by the recent cyclone Maila in both Western and Choiseul Provinces.

Upon arrival in Gizo, the Prime Minister paid a courtesy visit to the Premier of Western Province, Hon. Billy Veo, where he conveyed the Government’s solidarity with the people and provincial governments during this difficult time.

Prime Minister Manele thanked the Premier for the warm welcome and reaffirmed that the National Government stands firmly with Western and Choiseul Provinces as they respond to the impacts of the disaster.

“I am here to demonstrate our Government’s solidarity with the people of Western Province. We stand with you during these trying times,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the efforts made to expedite the delivery of relief supplies, noting that the Government has taken a more proactive and coordinated approach compared to past responses. He added that the Government continues to work closely with partners following the State of Disaster declaration.

On behalf of the Government, Prime Minister Manele also expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of Australia for its timely support, acknowledging the presence of the Australian High Commissioner who accompanied him during the visit.

“We are grateful for the continued support of our development partners, particularly Australia, as we work together to respond to this disaster,” he said.

Prime Minister Manele highlighted that once a comprehensive damage assessment is completed through the National Disaster Council (NDC), the Government will further strengthen coordination with affected provinces and development partners to support recovery efforts.

He stressed the importance of investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, noting the unusual impact and strength of the cyclone in Western Province.

“It is quite rare for a cyclone of this magnitude to affect Western Province. This underscores the urgent need for us to build stronger, climate-resilient infrastructure moving forward,” he said.

During the briefing, the Prime Minister commended the Provincial Disaster Operations Committee (PDOC) for its ongoing efforts on the ground, particularly in coordinating response operations across dispersed island communities, including Shortland Islands and Vella la Vella.

He acknowledged the logistical challenges faced, noting that favourable weather conditions have assisted in the distribution of relief supplies.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges shared with him and his delegation by the Provincial Member for North Vella La Vella, Ward 10, Hon. Freedom Tozaka, particularly regarding displaced communities. He noted the urgent need to address water, sanitation, and hygiene issues to prevent potential disease outbreaks, which are common following disasters.

In addition, the Prime Minister acknowledged the dedication of frontline responders, including the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), National Disaster Council (NDC), maritime authorities, Solomon Airlines, and partners such as the Australian Defence Force, for their coordinated response efforts.

“I commend all those involved for your hard work, coordination, and many sleepless nights to ensure assistance reaches our people,” he said.

Prime Minister Manele concluded by thanking the Premier of Western Province for the opportunity to meet and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting affected communities through response and recovery efforts.
