Solomon Islands Cancels Strong Wind Warning, Paving Way for Accelerated Relief Operations
HONIARA, Solomon Islands – April 13, 2026 – The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) has officially cancelled the Strong Wind Warning previously in effect for the waters of the Western Province. The cancellation, effective as of 2:00 PM local time yesterday, follows a standard review indicating that weather conditions are stabilizing across the region.
The lifting of this warning is a critical development for ongoing emergency relief efforts following Tropical Cyclone Maila. Adverse weather has hampered the delivery of emergency supplies to various islands since last weekend. With winds now easing, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), through the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), expects response operations to run more smoothly.
A statement from the NEOC says “Now that the cancellation has been finalized, we hope to fast-track the response to the islands as intended,” .
To further support these efforts, SIMS is issuing special forecasts for affected provinces to assist teams ferrying vital supplies via ships and boats.
Recent observations show a general northeast to east wind flow remains established over the Solomon Islands. Wind speeds, which were previously expected to reach 20 to 25 knots now dropped below the warning threshold. Meaning, the maritime areas of the Western Province no longer face the level of risk that required the initial alert.
