Agriculture and Livestock initiatives gain momentum

Honiara, Solomon Islands – The National Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, is driving forward with key initiatives to transform the agriculture sector and boost economic growth.

Permanent Secretary Dr Samson Viulu said in a quarterly Ministerial update this week that the Ministry is driving forward several key projects and vital reforms to boost the Agriculture sector.

One notable project is the Agriculture Investment for Markets and Nutrition (AIM-N) Project, which is benefiting over 18,000 people in Western and Choiseul Provinces, with plans to expand to Isabel Province. This six-year, US$20 million project aims to improve food security, nutrition, and rural incomes.

Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands Agriculture and Rural Transformation (SIART) Project is advancing in Guadalcanal, Malaita, and Makira/Ulawa, focusing on agricultural production and market access.

The Ministry is also supporting small and medium agribusinesses through the Commercial Agriculture Development Project Support Fund, with recent beneficiaries including Kokonut Pacific, Varivao Holding Limited, and Malo Kitchen.

Other initiatives include the Coconut Cocoa Revolving Fund, the national breeding centre for cattle, and the National Poultry Industry Development Initiative.

“These efforts are reinforcing the role of agriculture as a key pillar of economic development in the Solomon Islands,” said Dr Viulu.

The projects are progressing as planned, contributing to the transformation of the agriculture sector and driving economic growth.
