Police vehicle ditch due to mechanical problem
A police-marked vehicle at Central Police Station (CPS) ditched into a kitchen at Jericho today (8 March 2026) in east Honiara when assisting Naha police in the search for a missing boy.
The vehicle ditches due to a mechanical problem. The driver of the vehicle parks the car on a sloppy hill and waits for the other officer to go out and collect information regarding the missing boy.
When the officer arrives, he opens the door of the car and starts briefing the two officers in the vehicle. All of a sudden, the car starts sliding down the hill and ditches into a kitchen.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) of Honiara City Police, Superintendent Mark Buga, said the driver tries to step on the brake and pull up the handbrake, but it does not work, so the vehicle slides down and ditches into a kitchen.
PPC Buga said there were no injuries to the three officers; however, they were a bit traumatized following the accident. No one from the community gets injured. The missing boy has been located, and Naha police are assisting him for medical assistance.
Superintendent Buga said an inquiry file is now open to find out what is really the cause of the mechanical problem that allegedly led to the accident.
He acknowledged the people at Jericho for their understanding about the situation and keeping the police car safe for further arrangements for towing it to the police garage.
