ADB President Official visit to Solomon Islands
HONIARA, Solomon Islands (15 February 2026) — The President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Mr Masato Kanda, today, 15th, February, 2026, arrived in Honiara. According to the President’s itinerary, his 3 days stopover in Honiara is part of his high level engagement with leaders of the Pacific, which include Vanuatu, Fiji and Solomon Islands.
The Ministry of Finance and Treasury revealed that the President is scheduled on a number of high level engagement which includes meeting with the Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele, the Minister of Finance and Treasury Hon. Rexson Ramofafia, other senior government officials, as well as donor partners. Discussions will focus on infrastructure development, climate resilience, public sector reforms, and inclusive economic growth.
The President will also visit key ADB projects, including the Tina River Hydropower Project in Guadalcanal province and the new University of the South Pacific complex at KGVI in Honiara.
Also more importantly, the Ministry revealed that the President will officially open ADB’s new Resident Mission office here in Honiara. In April, 2025, the ADB Board approved the upgrade of its ADB Office here in Honiara to Residence Mission office. The inauguration of the Residence office, marks an important milestone in strengthening ADB’s in-country presence and engagement with Solomon Islands Government.
Solomon Islands cooperation with ADB commenced since 1973, through financing and technical assistance on projects and programs. These investments are helping connect communities, strengthen institutions, improve access to essential services, and promote sustainable economic growth across the country.
The visit underscores ADB’s broader commitment to Pacific developing member countries, focusing on practical and tailored solutions to address the region’s unique challenges, including geographic isolation, small markets, and vulnerability to climate change and external shocks.
The President was welcomed upon his arrival by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Mckinnie Dentana, and the Head of the ADB Residence Mission in Honiara, Mr. Anthony Gill.
