The Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) today signed a Quadripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Forestry and Research (MoFR), the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), and Solomon Islands National University (SINU) to enhance environmental management of Bloody Ridge National Historical Park (BRNHP).

The MOU establishes a collaborative framework for the sustainable conservation, development, and protection of Bloody Ridge as both a national heritage site and a globally recognised historical and tourism destination.

Under the agreement, the four Parties will work together in the areas of environmental conservation, sustainable tourism development, research and education, climate change adaptation, and community engagement.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mr Bunyan Sivoro, said the agreement represents a major step forward in protecting one of Solomon Islands’ most significant historical landscapes.

“Bloody Ridge is not only a symbol of our wartime history, but also an important natural environment. This partnership brings together expertise from government and academia to ensure the site is protected, restored, and managed sustainably for future generations,” Mr Sivoro said.

Key areas of collaboration under the MOU include reforestation and biodiversity restoration, eco-tourism development, academic research and training programmes, climate change resilience planning, and stronger monitoring and enforcement against illegal activities within the park.

Solomon Islands National University will support research and education initiatives, including student and faculty involvement in biodiversity conservation, and landscape rehabilitation, while sharing findings with all partner ministries to support evidence-based decision-making.

A multi-agency Bloody Ridge Environmental Management (BREM) Taskforce will coordinate implementation of the MOU. The MOU will remain in force for five years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism acknowledges the commitment of all partner institutions in working together to safeguard Bloody Ridge National Historical Park as a place of remembrance, education, conservation, and national pride.
