The Solomon Islands Education Board (SIEB) has endorsed key policy papers to address teacher absenteeism, adopt Competency-Based Education, and set a minimum teaching qualification.In a meeting held on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, at the Japanese Restaurant, Mendana Hotel, the SIEB endorsed the following key policy papers:
- Teacher Attendance Management Guide
- Transitioning to Competency-Based Education
- Draft Policy on Teaching Qualification Requirements for Teachers in Solomon Islands
The policy papers were presented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Rodie, supported by Chief Education Officer Honiara City Council Education Provider Mr. Ellison Mane and HCC Education Inspector Elvis Kikolo.
At the meeting, the SIEB was also provided with the latest updates on the ongoing reforms and activities implemented by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.
The ongoing reforms were presented by the MEHRD Senior Management Team (SMT) and the Head of Department, which includes:
- SINTA demands and SINTA/SIG-MEHRD Agreement
- Teachers’ new classification and salary structure and back pay
- Policy on teacher accommodation and rentals, and annual leave
- Agency Agreement, Provincial Education Board, and challenges
- System Transformation Program Baseline Study Report
- MEHRD Annual Work Plan 2026.
Chair of the SIEB, Mr. Alfred Ghemu, acknowledged the commitment and steady support of the members and MEHRD Senior Management Team, and the Head of Department throughout the year.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Rodie was overwhelmed by the support of the board for being critical and providing appropriate advice for decision-making.
He said that the SIEB has set a standard in conducting the meeting.
