Solomon Islands Ambassador to China Congratulates Medical Trainees at Guizhou Medical University

Nine medical practitioners from the National Referral Hospital (NRH) have successfully completed a three-month intensive, specialized hands-on training program at the China–Solomon Islands Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery Training Center, located at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University in Guizhou Province, China.
In September 2025, the Solomon Islands Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Barrett Salato, attended the graduation ceremony of the nine practitioners, who formed the first cohort under the medical collaboration program between NRH and the Guizhou Medical University Hospital.
The training was designed to equip Solomon Islands doctors, nurses, and technicians with advanced knowledge and practical skills to support the full operationalization of the newly built China Aid Comprehensive Medical Center in Honiara.
Speaking on behalf of the Solomon Islands Government, Ambassador Salato extended his heartfelt congratulations to the nine participants for their achievements. He highlighted that they are now equipped with “practical knowledge and new skills to provide better quality healthcare and professional services to patients, and to save many lives when they return home.”
The trainees commended the program, noting that they had gained valuable experience in operating theater procedures, medical equipment handling, blood bank management, and patient record management. They expressed their commitment to applying their knowledge and skills to improve healthcare delivery in the Solomon Islands.
The nine medical practitioners who completed the training are:
- Dr. Augustin Gasivaka Melly – General Surgeon
- Dr. Florence Oriana Fiuramo – Surgeon
- Dr. Anisha Barimata Elisha Sute – Physician in Nephrology
- Dr. Ellison Bradley Manegehe – Emergency Physician
- Mrs. Salome Tauqata – Surgical Nurse
- Mr. Brymley Sade – Medical Nurse
- Mrs. Densy Joan Sa’ohu – Operating Room Nurse
- Ms. Miranda Hanimaha – Medical Laboratory Technician
- Ms. Esther Tracy Mariu – Medical Laboratory Technician
Ambassador Salato also conveyed the Solomon Islands Government’s deep appreciation to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China, through the Guizhou Provincial Government and its Affiliated Hospital, for their generosity and significant support in strengthening the Solomon Islands’ health sector.
The closing ceremony was attended by Professor Li Haiyang, Party Secretary of the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University; Ms. Yang Guanghong, Vice Commissioner of the Guizhou Provincial Health Commission; as well as doctors, nurses, and members of the China Medical Team.
Following the training, the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University will donate new urological equipment to the NRH, which will be installed at the Comprehensive Medical Center in Honiara. This marks another important milestone in advancing the Solomon Islands’ healthcare facilities and services.
