Steady Progress on Rescue Fire Service Station at Honiara International Airport
The Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) is pleased to announce steady progress on the construction of the Rescue Fire Service Station at Honiara International Airport.
Funded by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), the project is being implemented by MCA, with China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) carrying out the works and Egis providing construction supervision services.
As of now, 90% of construction materials have been delivered to the site, and physical completion stands at 53%.
Despite a temporary delay due to non-compliance in concrete compressive strength, rectification works are underway, and the project is back on track.
The contractor has commenced under-slab blockwork and concrete pouring for columns, with backfilling works ongoing.
Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, said, “This facility is vital for strengthening aviation safety and emergency response in Solomon Islands. We are pleased with the progress and remain committed to delivering a high-quality, resilient station for all air travelers.”
The SIRAP2 project is delivering a range of infrastructure investments across the country, including:
Construction of Aviation Complex Building, Improvements to Noro Roads, Construction of four new bridges in Malaita, Upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, Installation of air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, Maintenance of regional airports, Rehabilitation of 21 kilometers of East Road and sealing of 12 kilometers of North Road
These investments aim to enhance connectivity, promote safe travel, and support inclusive economic growth across Solomon Islands.
