Solomon Islands Advances Maritime Sovereignty Efforts Amid Climate Change Challenges

NICE, France, Monday, 9 June 2025 — Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele has outlined the government’s ongoing efforts to secure maritime boundaries and strengthen ocean governance amid escalating climate threats at the UN Oceans Conference currently underway in Nice, France.

Solomon Islands has finalized maritime boundary agreements with neighboring countries Australia, France (New Caledonia), Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu, safeguarding sovereign rights over its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and marine resources.

However, only 10% of the country’s EEZ has been surveyed to date. Prime Minister Manele stressed the urgent need for increased scientific research, technical support, and financial assistance to complete comprehensive maritime boundary delineation and improve ocean management.

He called on the international community to provide enhanced support to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Solomon Islands, emphasising that securing maritime boundaries is vital for protecting sovereignty, marine biodiversity, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The Solomon Islands’ efforts align with regional initiatives to strengthen ocean governance and build climate resilience.
