National Security Strategy aims to address 5 strategic goals

The recently launched National Security Strategy 2025 aims to address five key strategic goals aimed at protecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and well-being of Solomon Islanders.

It offers an interconnected framework for tackling both traditional and non-traditional security threats while ensuring that national security efforts are aligned with the country’s National Development Strategy (NDS) and international obligations.

Top on the list of the five goals is to enhance National Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity.

The key objective of this goal is to strengthen border security and surveillance to prevent illegal activities, including smuggling and unauthorized entry.

It also aims to collaborate with regional and international partners to bolster maritime security to protect the country’s waters from illegal fishing and trafficking, while at the same time aims to implement robust policies to manage traditional border crossings while ensuring the safety and security of local communities.

The second goal is to Promote and Protect Internal Security and Social Cohesion.

The objective of this goal is to address unresolved tensions and grievances through fully implementing the Townsville Peace Agreement and community-based reconciliation initiatives.

Furthermore, it aims to develop and enhance community-policing strategies that foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement and local communities, while it also aims at strengthening the capacity of all national and local law enforcement agencies to respond effectively to security threats, including crime and civil unrest.

The third goal of the strategy is to Safeguard the Human Security and Well-being of Solomon Islanders.

The objective of this goal is to promote policies and programs that address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and access to education.

It also aims to enhance disaster preparedness and response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and climate change on vulnerable populations while also supporting initiatives to protect human rights, particularly for marginalized and at-risk communities.

Furthermore, it aims to promote Gender equality and empowerment of women and youth in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

The further goal is to Strengthen National Governance and Institutional Frameworks by building public trust and accountability and fostering good governance and transparency within national security institutions.

The other objective of this goal is to establish a coordinated national security framework integrating various government agencies, civil society, and local communities in security planning and implementation while at the same time enhancing legal and regulatory frameworks to address emerging security challenges, including those related to technology, cyber threats, and organized crime.

The fifth and final goal of the strategy is to Build Resilience against External Threats and Influences.

The objective of this goal is to enhance diplomatic relations and security cooperation with regional, bilateral, and other global partners to address transnational threats like terrorism and trafficking.

The goal also aims to develop a comprehensive strategy for managing potential threats linked to the Citizenship by Investment and Ship Registration schemes, ensuring rigorous vetting and oversight while also engaging in regional security dialogues and initiatives to promote stability and peace in the South Pacific.

The NSS 2025 is crucial for maintaining peace and stability, fostering social cohesion, and building resilience against natural and artificial disasters.

It reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the nation’s interests including its people, natural resources, and critical infrastructure, while promoting sustainable development.

This strategy will guide decision-making and provide a roadmap for strengthening the country’s security architecture.
