The Constituent Assembly Task Force, within the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, OPMC, has successfully conducted a one day workshop on the Constitution (Amendment) (Constituent) Act 2023 with the Western Provincial Executive at Gizo, Western Province on Tuesday 07th May 2024.
Western Provincial Executive is the first Provincial Government to host the first workshop after the Constitution (Amendment) (Constituent) Act 2023 was passed by Parliament in December 2023.
The workshop presented the Constituent Assembly Act 2023 to the Western Provincial Members and explained the provisions and requirements and what is expected of the Provincial Executives.
Speaking during the opening of the workshop, Western Provincial Premier Honourable Billy Veo said the workshop is timely and reflects the National Government’s commitment towards the Federal Government System.
“My Government has been pressuring the National Government last year for the implementation of the Federal Constitution as a way forward for the Federal Government System.
“And so we are very happy to have this workshop to pave the way to establish the Constituent Assembly for the implementation of the Federal Constitution,” highlighted Premier Veo.
Premier Veo stressed that Western Province has been long vying for the Federal Government System and so it is one of the top priorities of the Western Provincial Government.
Premier Veo added his Executive will be calling on all nine Members of the National Parliament for a meeting later this year regarding his Executive’s stand on the Federal Constitution.
Constitutional Reform Unit Director, Philip Houlia thanked the Western Provincial Premier and his executive for taking the lead on the way forward in the implementation of the Constitution (Amendment) (Constituent Assembly) Act 2023.
Mr Houlia explained that the workshop also provided opportunity to build wealth of knowledge and information on Policies and programs on the proposed Draft Federal Constitution.
Same workshop will be conducted to other Provincial Executives later this year.
